Furnace Service Built for Real Kansas Winters
Westerhouse has been making furnace service calls out of the shop on 20th Street since 1977. Long enough to know that a furnace out here works harder than whatever’s in the brochure. The wind off the fields west of Eudora hits different than it does in a Lawrence subdivision, where houses are packed closer together for a windbreak, and the first real cold snap along the Kansas River valley has a habit of landing two days before anyone’s ready for it. December of ’22, it dropped nineteen degrees in about six hours. We took a lot of calls that night. Most of them were furnaces that had been making a noise since October that nobody called about.

Maintenance Actually Saves You Money, and Yes We Know Everyone Says That
A maintenance visit usually takes about forty minutes and costs less than people expect. An emergency repair on a weekend in February costs more, and you’re without heat until we get there. Furnaces don’t fail out of nowhere. A flame sensor builds up a layer of carbon over a season or two. A blower bearing can start making a faint noise months before it fails, and most people don’t notice it until it’s loud enough to matter. By then it usually means replacing the part instead of cleaning it.
Going a few years without furnace service raises the risk of a breakdown. It also means the furnace uses more gas or electricity the whole time to do the same job. That shows up on the bill even when nothing else about the house has changed.
What We Actually Do During a Tune-Up
What we do during a visit depends on the house. A twelve-year-old American Standard furnace in an older Eudora farmhouse gets checked differently than a two-year-old system in a newer build off K-10, mostly because the filter setup and duct runs aren’t the same, and older attics can be harder to get into. The core checklist stays the same either way. We inspect the heat exchanger for cracks; it is the one item on this list that’s a safety issue, not just a performance one. The ignition and burner is tested, the filters are changed. We check gas pressure and combustion. The blower assembly is gone over. We also check the thermostat calibration, because a furnace can be running perfectly fine while the thermostat is lying to it by three or four degrees.
Every visit ends with a carbon monoxide test. This takes under two minutes. Nobody ever asks about it and we do it anyway.

Eudora is our home base. We still service accounts that David and Aaron’s dad and grandfather set up before either of us was old enough to hold a wrench. Lawrence has become the busiest area outside Eudora itself — older neighborhoods near downtown especially, where the furnaces have some age on them. Baldwin City calls come in steady too, a good number from around Baker University, where the cold seems to settle a little differently than it does five miles up the road. We can’t fully explain that one. It might be the tree cover, might just be the way the wind funnels through there. Either way, our techs know the housing in these towns well enough that they’re not starting from zero on a service call.

This part of our coverage is newer and it’s grown mostly because of new construction pushing further into Johnson County. Those furnaces are often still under manufacturer warranty, which matters more than people expect, because skipping annual service can actually void that coverage. We document every single visit for that reason. It’s a longer drive than staying inside Douglas County, but we’ve built the routes so nobody out there is waiting longer than someone five minutes from our door.
Signs Something’s Off
Short cycling is when the furnace clicks on and off more than it used to. A flame that isn’t burning that steady blue anymore. A burning-dust smell that hangs around past the first day you turn the heat on for the season. A thermostat that seems to be arguing with the furnace instead of running it. Bills creeping up for no reason you can point to. None of these mean you need a whole new furnace.
